Three years ago, my brother-in-law Brad had a vision of a family camping/snorkle/scuba trip on Catalina Island after taking some youth from their church there. I was lucky enough to participate in the first excursion and every year since. This was the third annual Catalina adventure, but I believe, officially makes it a tradition! Each year we figure things out a little better...fewer things...less stress, and this year like each succeeding year has been the best!
Rather than spend the usual day loafing on the beach and taking a few jaunts on the sea kayaks, we rented a little skiff, rode around the island...
And found a beautiful, warm, abandoned cove where we jumped into the water. Those with snorkels saw manta rays and Girbaldi fish. Those of us without consumed large amounts of salt-water. Shelby was the first to jump in. That girl is part fish! It didn't matter that the water felt as though it were below freezing, first thing in the morning, she was there! Hannah went a little less willingly from the boat, but thanks to her pint-size-ness, her dad was easily able to throw her in. Once in, she was happy as a clam.
Amazingly, I joined them. It was so much easier to just jump in than make my way in inch by inch from the beach.
And even Lynda was talked into joining the fun. Brad stayed in the boat and made sure we didn't drift out to sea. But after lunch we went back to shore where we gathered all our snorkel equipment and everyone participated.
